GRIFFITHS FAMILY HISTORY

HOMEFAMILY

Our Griffiths family start of in 1600's in Ruardean, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire the name then was spelt Grifit, there have been a few variations with the spelling. The Griffiths' that we know most about all headed north and some on to New Zealand. A few of us are in contact with each other and we all come from GILES and SARAH MORGAN so please contact me and I can pass your e-mail on to whoever knows more about that particular branch. The Griffiths' that went to Chevington were related to my Mackenzies by several marriages.

ELIZA born abt Jan 1823 was the daughter of Giles and Sarah, she was born in Ruardean and married John Taylor in Trevithin, Monmouth in May 1845. Sometime after that they went north and settled in Chevington, Northumberland.

GEORGE Griffiths son of Giles and Sarah born abt 1832 in Ruardean married Diana Llewelyn Nov 1857 in the Abergavenny area, Diana was born in Bleanavon. Sometime between 1873 and 1876 George & Diana and their 6 children headed north to Chevington, Northumberland. George was a miner and it is more than likely he worked at Broomhill colliery.

Between 1874 and 1876 the family moved to Amble in Northumberland 3 more children were born to them. Henry and Rebecca did not marry as far as we can see although Rebecca called herself Griffiths. Naomi Griffiths was the daughter of George and Diana (Llewelyn) she was born 1860 in Bleanavon, Monmouth, she married George Singleton who was a widower with a child Albert in April 1892. Albert was only 1 year old when Naomi and George married. They lived in Bedlington.
GILES JESSE Griffiths born 1869 son of George and Diana was born in Trevethin, Monmouth. He married Margaret Jordan in 1888 in Warkworth. Margaret was pregnant with their 8th child in 1906 when Giles was tragically killed in a mining accident at Bedlington Colliery.  Margaret married again after Giles died. George Henry, Giles' son was working in the same mine and shift when his father was killed, he was waiting for his father so they could go home together when they told him his father was dead.  George Henry went to New Zealand in the 1920's to live. George Henry used to write to my grandfather Thomas Mackenzie when he was a POW, I knew from my grandfathers diaries we had relations in New Zealand but did not know how many or the connection, now we have two sets of Griffiths' that went out there.
MARY ALICE Griffiths was a daughter of George and Diana she was born 1873 in Varteg Hill and married Daniel Mckenzie Mar 1893. Mary was always called Alice and stood 5ft 10ins tall, she was always called "bonny Alice" because she was so beautiful. When they were first married they lived with Diana in Togston who was by then a widow.

JAMES Griffiths born 1871 in Chevington.

James was the son of Thomas and Eliza, by all accounts he was quite a character. James was a miner and had an allotment where he brewed some sort of alcohol in his shed, quite a few of the men would gather there! He was a co founder of the Red Row Club, where his picture hangs. He and his wife had 12 children. One of his grandchildren told me that his father said as kiddies they never had shoes on their feet but he bought the first keg of beer for the club!
